This is a historic week in the history of marriage and all that it takes to make one successful.
Seven years ago, this week, months away from our twentieth anniversary… my wife declared she was done. Even had the divorce papers to prove it.
Our story has been explained in detail throughout the Becoming a Better Man blog. I am through reliving those stories and everything involved in restoring our marriage.
But, you should know that things have never been better.
I am writing this from the balcony of a resort in Cancun where my wife and I are wrapping up our latest adventure. Since we never managed to have a legitimate honeymoon, we decided to make it happen… 26 years later.
Better late than never I guess.
Over the last ten days, we have survived a journey to test all marriage vows. Border crossings, treacherous bus rides, horrible accommodations, cold showers, a deadly hurricane, antique mattresses, and eventually a weekend in paradise. We also discovered Airbnb for cheap places to stay and met all kinds of great people as a result. The stuff legends are made of.
We have bonded in ways that Hollywood only dreams of presenting. We have become a couple that I never… not in my wildest dreams… could have imagined. We have not only survived divorce papers and four miserable years of restoration, we have come through and become a passionate one-flesh force to be reckoned with.
To say I am in love with this woman is like calling the Grand Canyon a hole. To say I am happily married is like saying Apple or Microsoft has experienced a degree of success.
Unless you have refused to give up on your marriage and fought to save it, you absolutely have no idea what it can be.
Seven years. The number of completion. Sure. We came full circle and turned this thing around to the point where I am in complete awe of what has happened.
Details will follow in my blog posts over the next few weeks, but for know, just know this…
We are doing great. Marriages can be saved. Life is good.
